Essential Tips for Choosing the Right Photographer

The perfect photograph can tell a compelling story, or elevate your brand to new heights. But finding the right photographer to bring your vision to life can feel like navigating a labyrinth of choices. But before you embark on your search, arm yourself with these essential tips to ensure a successful collaboration and stunning results that will leave a lasting impression.

Know the style you’re looking for

Photography has many many subcategories and not every photographer will specialise in the style you’re looking for. Are you looking for someone to take pictures of your new product? Then a residential photographer isn’t right for you. Or, if you’re planning your wedding, a sports photographer won’t be of much use. While we all use a camera, that’s where the similarities end. Take a look through their portfolio, read their headlines, if it’s not clear what they specialise in, that might be a red flag and not worth your time.

Consider the number of images you need

It seems like a basic thought but the number of times people underestimate what they need is astounding. Today your image is everything and whether you’re using your image for marketing or your acting portfolio, you’re likely to need a certain number of images. Take some time to contemplate and plan what the images will be used for and how many you’ll need. Some images can be recycled many times while others require a unique approach.

Have an idea of where they’ll be used

As alluded to, the way you intend to use your images should heavily inform your conversation with your photographer. If you’re planning to use these images on your website, you’ll want them to portray a particular message. Make sure you know what this is ahead of time, so you can say, for example, ‘I need at least two images I can use on my home page, one which carries authority, the other that shows authenticity’. There’s always room for new ideas and collaboration but make sure you get what you need.

Think budget early

Now that you know the basics you need to have an idea of what you’re willing to pay for what you need. There are a number of photographers at different budget and quality levels, so do some research and make your tier list. Get an idea of the cost of great, standard and passable photography, then see where your budget and appetite falls.

Follow these guiding principles and you’ll definitely leave your consultations and sessions happy and with some cracking images.
